Por parte de Bulgaria hay 5 jugadores que disputaron las fases finales de los Mundiales de 1994 y 1998, así como la Eurocopa de 1996: Ivanov, Kostadinov, Stoitchkov, Yordanov, y Balakov, así como Iliev que solo jugó en USA94. Tras una primera parte igualdad, donde se adelantaron los suizos, Bulgaria salió en avalancha teniendo varias oportunidades y dando sensación de peligro. Sin embargo, Suiza marcó el segundo gol, llevándose el partido. Se estaba ensamblando el mejor equipo búlgaro de todos los tiempos, que sería cuarto en USA94.
