This match features a hidden gem of Brazilian football: Portuguesa's Dener. He was one of the best prospects in Brazil's football history. It was a consensus amidst the Brazilian media that he would win at least one FIFA World Player of the Year award throughout his career. His game was based on dribbles (the most appreciated football aspect by Brazilians) and was summed up by him in his most famous phrase: "I'd rather dribble than score goals". He was an idol for great Brazilian players like Robinho. He did not play more games in the 1994 WC qualifiers because of his extra-footballing issues, but he was considered a no-brainer for the 1998 WC. Unfortunately, he died in a car accident in 1994 (he was sleeping on the passenger's seat), when rumours of advanced talks with Stuttgart were emerging. Cristóvão Borges (1989 Copa América player), Zé Maria (Perugia legend and played for the Seleção in various championships) and Capitão (the player with the most games played for Portuguesa ever) were the other highlights. Telê Santana's São Paulo was arguably the best South American team and one of the best teams in the world in the early 1990s. He applied his philosophy of "the best defense is a good offense" to turn the Tricolor Paulista into a magical team. São Paulo came to this match as the undisputed leader of the São Paulo State Championship and would play without the legendary Cafu, Ronaldo ("Ronaldão", member of the 1994 Brazil's WC team) and Elivélton, all of them injured. They featured the superb maestro Raí (brother of Sócrates, one of the best football players of all time), started the 1994 WC as Brazil's captain, is a PSG legend and was considered the best São Paulo player of all time until Rogério Ceni started being considered a demigod figure in the mid 2000s. Another highlight was Müller, one of the best Brazilian forwards of his generation, he played 3 WCs for Brazil - 1986, 1990 and 1994. The legendary midfielder Cerezo, showing that he was like wine and could play at the highest level despite his age, was another highlight for São Paulo. Zetti (a great goalkeeper and a 1994 WC member), Palhinha, Vítor (played for Real Madrid) and Válber (considered a future starter for Brazil's National team) were all Seleção level players as well.
